Mass celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Sunday 26 February 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the analogy of putting new wine into fresh skins Jesus challenged his followers and us to see the cost in daily life of being followers of Jesus. When Saint Augustine said: “Late have I loved you, beauty so ancient, beauty so new, you were within and I outside”, he highlighted the invitation which God gives us to discover in daily life how he has loved us first. Everything we love and do has to be flavoured and challenged by this.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the love of Jesus Christ,

“Rest in God alone my soul.”

The Gospel today tells us that we cannot serve two masters. It is not just saying, Lord, Lord, but doing God’s will. It is hearing God’s word and acting on them.

Saturday 25 February 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we thank God with our Sisters for the years of their vocation. Mary’s words of the Magnificat: “The Almighty has done great things for me; holy is his name”, can be our watchword as we enter these moments of thanksgiving.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Matthew 5:48) can often seem an impossible ideal. This implies a whole way of thinking and living. The Gospel reminds us of a whole lot of ways we can be perfect before God and others. In what does holiness consist? Commandments, church attendance, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, as in the Scriptures? Many religions have their own rules: for Buddhists, eight main points of righteousness; for Islam, five pillars; in India, good karma by observing non-violence, non-possessiveness and non-absolutism with good deeds.
