Dear Brothers and Sisters, After a night spent without catching fish Jesus sent the apostles back onto the sea of Tiberius. When they returned they carried in nets groaning with fish and struggled to bring them to the shore. Then Jesus did a remarkable thing. He said to Peter, “Tend my lambs, feed my sheep.” He gave Peter the work that he himself had done and foretold that Peter would die an unexpected death.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The establishment of the G.P. Centre for Medical Care is a clear indication of the outreach which has continued for so long through Saint Vincent’s Hospital towards the people of Fitzroy. Now with the involvement of Australian Catholic University in this joint project it is an indication of how spiritual, physical and mental health care is so important as we seek to nurture all of our people.

Together with the Director, Bishop Elliott, the Dean and Faculty members and all associated with the John Paul II Institute, I welcome you to this celebration of Graduation.

It is a time when young people formed according to the Gospel and with a truly Catholic vision come to bring their gifts, carrying them forward into their chosen profession for which we join in this service of prayer and thanksgiving.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In a modern, cynical and doubting age there can be very real reservations about the power of faith.

Faith can be seen as something irrational and illusory. Even more dangerously faith is presumed by some who have no foundation in reality. Yet Christian faith is an acknowledgement of the reality of God and the fact that his word and his promises are true. These are no mere illusion, but point to the greatest reality which this world has ever seen; the fact that God has shown his limitless love in rising from the dead. This has anticipated any need or doubt of ours and the reality of God’s love is our destiny to journey through life and come to be with him in heaven. This is our goal.

Dear Friends and Parishioners of Saint Philip’s,

On this Friday in the Easter Octave I rejoice at coming to celebrate with you the foundation of Saint Philip’s Parish on this day fifty years ago. Because Christ is risen our life has changed. Saint Philip’s has witnessed in school and parish to the risen life of Christ offered to people to reshape their lives for fifty years. With wonder and thanks to God we offer this Mass, rejoicing in the victory of Christ over sin and evil and committing ourselves to the proclamation and living of his Gospel in the future.
