Mass celebrated at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Sunday 19 June 2016

I have always thought it was significant that it was Saint Peter who would acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ of God. We must remember that Peter was a weak and sinful man, who denied Our Lord and was given by Our Lord the opportunity to profess his faith in him. This shows us the pattern of human life and also the readiness and possibility that we have to be converted and turn to God.

Address given by Archbishop Denis Hart at the farewell Mass for Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen, in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Wednesday, 1 June 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Tonight we come to farewell a bishop, a brother, a leader in the work of the Gospel. This farewell is particularly poignant because after arriving in Australia by boat in challenging circumstances, redolent of so many migrants who were fleeing violence and terror, Bishop Vincent has made Melbourne his home since 1980.
