Mass celebrated at Saint Leo the Great Parish, Altona North

Saturday 16 September 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,I am honoured to be with you and with Father Paul Tru as I begin my visitation of the parish, which will continue on Wednesday. We are invited to let our hold on others be quickly consumed in the fire of love or if we refuse to forgive them from the depths of our heart and continuously, we leave court with our plea dismissed only to find ourselves in the dock among the accused. In today’s Readings we see a contrast between the Lord’s way of looking at things and a very human, practical way. It is not surprising that Peter asks: “Lord, how often...

Funeral Mass for Father Thomas Carra, PE, celebrated by Archbishop Denis Hart at Corpus Christi Church, Kingsville

Friday 15 September 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.”
(John 6:51)

This timely reminder of the power of the Eucharist is especially applicable to the life of Father Thomas Joseph Carra, whose body we bring for burial today.

Father Tom passed away at Villa Maria Catholic Homes Nursing Home, Berwick, on last Friday evening in the 59th year of his priesthood and the 87th year of his age. With his brother Frank, absent because of illness, his loved sister Mary, family members and friends, we come to seek the Lord’s consolation as we pray for the repose of Father Tom.

Mass celebrated by Archbishop Denis Hart at Salesian College, Sunbury

Wednesday 13 September 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I am honoured to join Mr Mark Brokhus and the young women and men of Salesian College, Sunbury, as we gather to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the College.

This is a highly significant occasion when I pay tribute to the Salesian priests, brothers and lay masters and to all who have worked so hard to enable the growth of young people in an atmosphere of reasonableness and kindness, recognising the unique gifts of each.

I join you in thanking God for all that has been achieved here in an ongoing way.

Mass celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne. Mass of All Nations

Sunday 27 August 2017, 3pm

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I welcome priests and people from the many nations who are here in Melbourne to offer this Mss for all of those who have come here, for all who now make Australia home, enriched by the gifts and traditions of their own countries and by the common endeavour which we share.

Today Jesus speaks to his disciples asking them who people say he is. Peter’s affirmation, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”, is the watchword of our whole Catholic life.

Mass celebrated at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Sunday, 27 August 2017, 11am

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Today’s Gospel focuses us once again on who is Christ for our life. The whole of our faith is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It was Peter’s whole reason for existence, sustaining him in his weakness, drawing him out to be an articulate proclaimer and leader of the faith. Later at the Council of Jerusalem the commission that Jesus gave to Peter was accepted by all of the disciples.
