Blessing of Mazenod College Chapel, Mulgrave
Wednesday 6 June 2018
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I am honoured to pay this visit to Mazenod College and to join Father Christian Fini and members of staff and students, for the blessing of these facilities. May they long provide an enrichment to your learning and love and service of others.
'I am the Servant of the Lord.
Let what you have said be done to me.'
When Mary our Mother was told that she was to be the Mother of God, she humbly doubted the message of the angel because it was so great and so astonishing. Yet when it was explained to her she gave herself completely to the task, trusting in God, knowing that she would be given what she needed to complete it.
I have always admired the desire for learning, the obvious faith and the strong development across academic and technical subjects, music, culture, art, sport, and IT which has always existed at Mazenod.
You have a strong faith life with times of prayer, and all of this helps you to develop in appreciating the unique value of each human person. Each one of us is loved by God. Each one of us is absolutely unique.
Today as we bless these new facilities, we remember that they are for people who have been baptised, given the life of Jesus Christ, so that we can explore with heart and mind, intelligence and will, the subjects that we study and the relationships which we form with others.
As Mary was the handmaid of the Lord, so too we are men for others, who follow her in being open to God's powerful gifts so that we may be transformed and find in Jesus our way of life. To come to Jesus through Mary makes us aware that if we open ourselves to God we develop our abilities and we respect the abilities of others, then the contribution that we make will be life-giving.
So I do urge you to remember that openness to God, service of others, the importance of prayer and dedication and not giving up because only then will we realise the possibilities that God has for us.
'The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his name.'
