Blessing of relocated Calvary Silver Circle premises at Mount Waverley - Thursday 19 March 2015

BLESSING OF RELOCATED CALVARY SILVER CIRCLE PREMISES AT MOUNT WAVERLEY BY ARCHBISHOP DENIS HART ON THURSDAY, 19TH MARCH 2015 AT 3.00 P.M.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

This new facility of Calvary Silver Circle arises from the tradition of the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. The names Calvary and Little Company of Mary Healthcare are synonymous with compassionate service of people at all stages of life.

You know that the Little Company of Mary was established by Venerable Mary Potter in England in 1877 and the Sisters’ primary ministry was prayer for and care of the sick, dying and those in need. Only eight years later six Sisters sought to bring care and compassion to those in need here in Australia and the first nursing school was established in Sydney in 1889.

From the work of the Sisters has developed the gifted collaboration of over ten thousand staff and volunteers working in hospitals, aged care and community care services around Australia.

The spirit of the Little Company of Mary arises from being with Our Lady before her Son on Calvary to bring the healing ministry of Jesus to those who are sick, dying and in need through being for others.

While we thank God for the completion of this new facility and for the extension of its work into the community, we remember the core values of the Little Company of Mary, of hospitality, healing, stewardship and respect. Hospitality means an openness to people and their gifts. Healing implies a response to the whole person by caring for their spiritual, psychological and physical wellbeing because each person is valued as being made in the image and likeness of God.

This facility reminds us that each one of us has gifts recognised by God, which we are challenged to use in a spirit of striving for excellence, developing personal talents and handing on the tradition which the Sisters have of the love of Mary for her Son on Calvary.

One of the unique qualities of those who live for the Gospel is the respect for the dignity of each person and for the fact that they are uniquely loved and respected by God. Justice and compassion no matter what the circumstances are the watchword.

I thank God for this new facility and for those who will staff it and also for the people to whom these men and women will minister with the compassion of Christ and the care of Our Lady.

May the inspiration of the Little Company of Mary, which inspired love and care, be a reminder of the outreach which will come from this facility and the respect for unique gifts and goodness, which will come forth from it.

The care which expands into Melbourne’s southern suburbs from Bethlehem Hospital is a clear indication of the love and grace which comes from standing with Mary at the foot of the cross to bring compassion, light and strength to those who suffer.

Congratulations to all who have carried this project forward.

+ Denis J. Hart,
ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE.
