Blessing of St Vincent’s Public Hospital’s new Heart Centre, 13 November 2013
BLESSING OF THE NEW HEART CENTRE AT SAINT VINCENT’S PUBLIC HOSPITAL
CELEBRATED BY ARCHBISHOP DENIS HART ON WEDNESDAY, 13TH NOVEMBER 2013 AT 5.00 P.M.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This new Heart Centre is a clear indication of a fact of which I, as Archbishop, am so proud as I join you in thanking God for the development of this new Centre. In a Christian understanding, because of its important function in the human body, the heart is seen as the centre of all that each person is.
The Church has long understood the heart as the place of affection, of respect for the dignity of each person and of the fidelity to truth and to mission, which is so well enshrined here at Saint Vincent’s. Because, following the motto of the Sisters of Charity, it is the charity of Christ which urges us on. In the use of modern technology, medical skill, patient caring, encouragement and inspiration, the proud traditions of Saint Vincent’s find their expression in the very real care and respect that we have for those who come seeking our help.
I do not ever tire of saying how proud I am of Saint Vincent’s, because of the unique Christian spirit, the respect for the dignity of the human person and the spirit of service and giftedness which characterises those who give of their talent at all levels in this hospital.
May this Heart Centre be a place of healing and comfort. May it remind all who work here of how fortunate we are to care for those who suffer and for those who come as clients or patients. May they discover an end to anxiety, a care which carries them forward and a light and hope in what is often a very uncertain time of illness.
Christian suffering borne with patience is life-giving, not only for the person, but for all who come in contact with them. Many times as a priest have I spoken with doctors who have applauded the real courage and faith of people who are suffering, often big challenges in their lives.
May this place be always a place where the attitudes of Jesus, the care and compassion that each of us have experienced from him will shine in our lives, in our professional conduct and in the genuine service which we provide.
Congratulations Saint Vincent’s. Once again I thank you for the great witness which you give, together with magnificent skill and healing, in this our city of Melbourne.
+ Denis J. Hart,
ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE.
