Mass for the feast of Pentecost - Sunday 8 June

MASS CELEBRATED BY ARCHBISHOP DENIS HART AT SAINT PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL, MELBOURNE, ON PENTECOST SUNDAY, 8TH JUNE 2014, AT 11.00 A.M.,WITH CONFIRMATION.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today, God through the Church offers us the fruits of Easter, the Spirit of God who sets us aflame with his fire, filling the universe and the earth.  We believe that when the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles at the first Pentecost he transformed the apostles into courageous and fearless witnesses.

In Baptism the Holy Spirit is present and in Confirmation he comes to live fully in our soul as in a temple.  As persons we become holy places.  God comes in, never violating our freedom, but remains there to make our words speak of Christ, our deeds proclaim him and in our human weakness his strength and inspiration to be ours.

The first apostles preached the marvels of God.  You and I are invited to show anew that God is wonderful.  The first apostles said that Jesus is Lord; we are challenged to make him the central focus of our life.  The first apostles were sent out to be instruments of forgiveness; we are challenged to see other people “as those who are part of us” in our work and witness for the welfare of our world.  If the fire of the Spirit’s love is kindled in us, then with his help truly the world will be changed and made new.  What then will be our response?

+ Denis J. Hart,

ARCHBISHOP OF MELBOURNE.
