Mass for the celebration of wedding anniversaries, Saint Patrick’s...

Sunday 31 July 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters, This homily might well be entitled, ‘You can’t take it with you’. The industrialist and philanthropist, John D. Rockefeller, lived from 1839 to 1937, founding the Standard Oil Company, becoming the world’s first billionaire, but spent the last forty years of his life creating foundations to help medicine, education and scientific research. He was a very shy man and when he died at the age of ninety-eight someone asked his closest aides how much he had left behind and the aide replied, ‘he left all of it’.

Mass for the Convention of the National Council of Priests at Albert Park

Thursday, 28th July 2016

Dear Brothers in the Priesthood,

At this time in July many older priests from our Seminaries celebrate their ordination anniversaries. For me it is a time to express the wonder of the priesthood and to thank God for the constant, dedicated work of good priests throughout our country. Your joy, your deep faith, your humanity, the realisation that for the diocesan priest our lives are entwined with those of the people. We deal with the uncertain and unpredictable, we are there because we are given in hope for his people.

Mass celebrated at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Sunday 19 June 2016

I have always thought it was significant that it was Saint Peter who would acknowledge that Jesus is the Christ of God. We must remember that Peter was a weak and sinful man, who denied Our Lord and was given by Our Lord the opportunity to profess his faith in him. This shows us the pattern of human life and also the readiness and possibility that we have to be converted and turn to God.
