Sunday, 25 June 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today it is my honour on behalf of the Holy Father to present the Cross ‘Pro Ecclesiae et Pontifice’ to Father Luciano Rocchi, a longstanding Italian chaplain, priest and gifted pastor in our Archdiocese.

Father Luciano was born on 9th March 1926 in Prignano (Modena) Italy.

He was ordained to the priesthood on 22nd December 1950 and arrived in Australia on 11th September 1951, and has served as Chaplain to the Italian community ever since.

Although much of his time has been spent here at Hawthorn in this Archdiocese, he has also served at Plumpton, Leichhardt and Yoogali in New South Wales, Newton in South Australia and Brisbane in Queensland.

He is recognised as the iconic pastor of the Italian community and is highly esteemed by priests and people alike.

I congratulate Father Rocchi on this singular honour and, on behalf of His Holiness, I am delighted to present him with this significant award.
