The Gospel we proclaim: Evangelii Gaudium

Monday 24 February 2013 IN my last column, I wrote about Pope Francis’ vision, outlined in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), for a ‘missionary transformation’ of the whole Church. His vision is for a Church which has encountered God in Jesus Christ, which knows the Good News of the Kingdom which he has given us to proclaim, and which enacts that Gospel in everything it says or does.

In the opening paragraph of his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis declares that it is his intention ‘to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelisation marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in the years to come’.

WE thank God for the Year of Faith, and ask him to always keep renewing in us the faith we need to bring the whole world to friendship with God in Jesus Christ.

ACCORDING to St Mark’s account, Jesus came proclaiming the Gospel that ‘the Kingdom of God is coming near’ (Mark 1:15). For this reason, he called every human person to believe this good news, and to repent of their rebellion against God so that all might enjoy the coming reign of God.

AT THE beginning of the Apostles’ Creed, we confess: ‘I believe in God, the Father almighty.' In an earlier column we asked the question: ‘What does it mean that God is “almighty”?’ We might think that the answer lies in his power to create and sustain the world, or to work miracles or perhaps to bring about the conversion of hearts.
