THE story of the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland, California, begins with a devastating earthquake on 17 October 1989 that rendered the St Frances de Sales Cathedral unusable. For nearly 20 years, the Diocese of Oakland was without a cathedral.

ST PATRICK'S Cathedral was built largely from the generosity of the Irish immigrants to Victoria between 1801 and 1900, and they brought with them a particular spirituality and a love for St Patrick, which is evident in the imagery within the Cathedral.
