Malcolm Turnbull's attempt to ‘bring the school funding wars to an end’ has been locked into law after the Gonski 2.0 school funding package finally passed through the Parliament in a marathon late-night session.

A $70 million settlement by the Federal Government to compensate more than 1900 asylum seekers currently or formerly held at the Manus Island detention centre can never fully compensate for lives lost, or the pain and suffering caused by Australia’s asylum seeker policies, the St Vincent de Paul Society says.

Each year the Queen’s Birthday Honours List recognises a diverse range of contributions and service across all fields, including professional endeavours, community work, Australia’s Defence Force and Emergency Services. Around 33 Catholics who have contributed to the Church community have been included in the 2017 list.
