Dedicated, committed, selfless—Victorians recognised in Australia Day...

A number of Victorians have been recognised in this year's Australia Day honours. “Dedicated, committed, selfless — the people recognised today are outstanding and exemplify the best of Australia,” Governor-General David Hurley said in announcing this year's recipients. Almost 45 per cent of awards (375 in total) were for outstanding service or achievement in the community. The oldest recipient in the list is 97 years old. The youngest recipient is 19 years old.

 In an official statement released by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Mark Coleridge commended the heroic efforts of firefighters and the resilience of affected communities. He also acknowledged that many may be feeling a sense of helplessness in the face of this growing tragedy. "Prayerful support of our neighbours is an integral part of our response. ... A genuinely Catholic response to a crisis of this magnitude must draw strength from prayer which inspires concrete and compassionate action."
