But the widening gap between the rich and poor tells a different story, with the share of total income going to the top 1 per cent of Australians nearly doubling since the 1980s. And given that Pope Francis announced the first World Day of the Poor on 19 November, there’s never been a more fitting time to discuss growing levels of wealth inequality and poverty in Australia.

Today, the results of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey are in: 61.6 per cent of Australians have voted to legalise same-sex marriage with 7.8 million people responding Yes, and 4.8 million voting No. An estimated 79 per cent of Australians took part in the vote.
