Jesuit priests Fr Mark Raper, Superior of the Jesuits in Myanmar, and Fr Joaquim Sarmento , Regional Superior of Jesuits in Timor-Leste, are visiting Australia. They are both prominent leaders in their respective countries, and play key roles in leading Jesuit Mission-supported programs that help the most marginalised and vulnerable communities in their countries.

Fr Raper has also previously held the roles of President of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific, Provincial of Jesuits in Australia, and International Director of Jesuit Refugee Services.

Fr Sarmento is the first East Timorese to hold the role of Regional Superior, a role previously held by Fr Raper. He has seen his country go through the turmoil of civil conflict after independence to now rebuilding as one of the youngest countries in the world.

Helen Forde, Chief Executive Officer of Jesuit Mission, pictured below, made both Fr Raper and Fr Sarmento available for an interview with Melbourne Archdiocesan Director of Media and Communications, Shane Healy.
