Year of Youth Parish Focus: Sunbury

Since the announcement of Year of Youth by the Australian Catholic Bishops and Pope Francis, Sunbury Parish has been encouraged to start an active Youth Group. The Parish Priest, Fr Kevin McIntosh has endorsed the group and school principals and leaders from the area are also behind them.

The current youth group do fundraising for local charities by coordinating parish dinner dances but they wanted to have an active youth group where youth will feel connected to each other and to the parish community by gathering in an interactive and fun environment on a regular basis.

The parish is currently is working in collaboration with local parish schools, youth chaplains, Archdiocese Youth Leaders and students to produce a youth group that will appeal to local youth.

After attending the Year of Youth Launch in Melbourne, members of the parish came back to the parish full of enthusiasm and ready to launch their youth group, but what they want to achieve is taking a bit longer to plan and coordinate than they had originally thought. They are working slow and steady in order to produce something that will be wonderful, rather than rush into it and have it fail. Wiith a great team behind them, organisers are working on all the facets that need to be in place before the first session launches.

The things the organisers consider most important are Child Safe Standards, Policy and Procedures for sessions and events and marketing the group to parents and youth. All of these things are important before any kids even walk into the hall.

The hopes for the Sunbury Parish Youth Group are that the youth of our parish feel connected to each other, to leaders, to the parish, to their faith. Sunbury parish also wants to make sure the kids have a sense of belonging that will encourage them to develop their faith.
