On Wednesday 8 November, Jesuit priest Fr Frank Brennan SJ AO gave a major speech (view the article here) on the 110 year anniversary of the Harvester decision, which was a landmark Australian labour law decision of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration. He called on Australia’s political leaders to decide whether to continue down a path of growing inequality and exclusion or to ensure that a life of frugal dignity is within the grasp of all citizens. The respondent was Brigid Henley, the co-ordinator of Adult Justice Special Projects with Jesuit Social Services.

Irish nun wins prize, says money to go to health clinic in South Sudan

An Irish missionary Sister said she will use prize money raised by schoolchildren to help buy medicine for the Loreto Sisters' health clinic in South Sudan, where 10 percent of babies die before they are 3 months old.

This week is national Anti-Poverty Week (15-21 October). It aims to strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia. As part of Anti-Poverty Week, there are a number of events being hosted in Melbourne. These events aim to engage us more deeply with the challenge of poverty and our call to respond.
