The spire on the hill: St Ignatius’, Richmond

AT 12PM each day, when the Angelus rings out from the high bell tower of St Ignatius’ church in Richmond, the surrounding houses and streets on the steep slopes of Richmond Hill seem transformed in spirit into a Medieval European town, perhaps in France, clustering in the shadow of its cathedral. The bell makes its sound heard above the roar and rumble of trams and traffic in Church Street and echoes down the hillside and over the terrace houses, converted warehouses and new blocks of apartments of this historic Melbourne suburb.
