Bite Size Vatican II

SO, do we need yet another guide to the Second Vatican Council? Yes, according to this book’s author, Rev Dr Anthony Gooley.

Gooley is a deacon in the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane, and a husband and father. He has qualifications in psychology, education and theology, including a doctorate in theology, and has been involved in religious and theological education in Catholic schools, adult faith formation and universities for the past 25 years.

In his experience of adult education, Gooley discovered a general ignorance of Vatican II. He also found a general lack of understanding of the actual teachings of the council, both by so-called ‘conservatives’ and ‘progressives’ in the Church.

In Bite Size Vatican II, Gooley seeks to make the teachings of the council better known, providing an introductory guide, especially for teachers in Catholic schools and adult faith education groups.

The book is subtitled ‘A Very Basic Guide to the Council and its Four Constitutions’. The ‘very basic’ rather sells the book short. While the book is a very accessible guide to Vatican II that does not assume previous knowledge of the council by the reader, the material is nonetheless substantial.
