Wednesday 16 September 2020

Archbishop Peter A Comensoli

Dear friends in Christ, As we now welcome the beginnings of easing in COVID-19 Restrictions in Victoria, I would like to take this opportunity to write to you, the Clergy and people of our Archdiocese. It is great news that regional Victoria will, from tonight, move into the Third Step of the Roadmap to reopening, which includes our parishes located outside the metropolitan zone. However, we have a long way to go.

Learning how to use an iPad for the first time would be difficult for anyone, let alone when you’re 84 years old, and living with Alzheimer’s Disease. But that’s what Antoinetta Tenace has done, and her daughter Anna says she has never been happier. Anna has been caring for her mum for two years in the family home, which has its challenges, especially now, during Stage 4 lockdown. ‘We’re accustomed to it (lockdown) now; it’s become the norm. But before, she could go out, she would go shopping with me, and we would visit some friends.’

Archbishop Peter A Comensoli has written a special message to all the people of God in the Archdiocese, expressing his closeness and concern while recognising the many challenges facing the community during this extended period of lockdown. It follows last week's overturning of restrictions on spiritual ministry to the sick and the dying, an oversight that was quickly remedied by the Government. 'Throughout the pandemic, I have been advocating directly with the Government, reminding authorities continually of our respectful compliance with each stage of restrictions, and seeking a fair consideration in what is permitted,' said Archbishop Comensoli. 'The Catholic community throughout the pandemic has been constructive and positive. We have, and continue to act in a mature way, caring for the safety and vulnerability of Victorians facing great risk.'

A Letter to the Faithful Regarding Development of a COVID-19 Vaccine

A Letter to the Faithful Regarding Development of a COVID-19 Vaccine

Friends, I take this opportunity on the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross to share the perspective of the Catholic Church in Australia to development of a vaccine for COVID-19. Many Catholics have sought advice from the bishops about the ethics of a vaccine, which has been discussed widely in Australia in recent weeks. Early in September I met with the Federal Health Minister to discuss vaccines for COVID-19, following a letter I wrote to the Prime Minister in July. It was an opportunity to thank the Minister for the Government’s decision to pursue a COVID-19 vaccine, and to affirm that the bishops urge the provision of ethically uncontroversial vaccines. This would encourage the best possible vaccine coverage in our population.
