We your bishops rejoice in being with you - members of the Seminary staff, students and friends - as we celebrate Mass with the approach of the end of the 2001 College year.
As we look back on it there will be many reasons for thanksgiving for God's graces, for repentance and amendments for our failures, as well as hope for the future, as you advance towards priesthood.
Today we gather to ask the blessing of Almighty God upon the work of Syd Tutton, our new State President. We are grateful for his service up until now as a loyal Vincentian and we pray especially for the light of the Holy Spirit to guide his work among us in fulfilling the generous commitment he has undertaken as State President for Victoria.
Frederic Ozanam saw the Society as deeply involved in prayer and action. As we call to mind our sins, let us ask the Lord that he will direct our actions according to his pattern.
I rejoice sincerely with you in the re-opening of St Francis' Chapel in the midst of this busy shopping centre. It shows that God, who made us all, is part of every aspect of our life and that it is his gifts that we use for commerce, work, and entertainment. When we come to the Chapel we thank him for his gifts.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the management of Eastland, Father Kevin Dillon, Father Michael Morgan and the priests of the Maroondah Deanery, who celebrate the regular Masses, and Mr. Bernie Daffey and the volunteer staff who so generously help with the management of the Chapel.
At the beginning of this year Pope John Paul II wrote to the people of the Church encouraging us to come to Christ, remembering that he is our God who saved us. Each of us personally needs to seek holiness through prayer and God's Word, so that we can then be prepared to carry his love into our life of work, family and recreation.
