Retail therapy alone cannot save us: A case for spiritual wellbeing

Clearly there is a strong economic argument to be had with opening the retail and hospitality sector. However, one could make a similar argument with the economic benefit of supporting the wellbeing of our citizens. Sacred buildings, rites and rituals can and should also be allowed to operate in a COVID-safe way. Instead, we are so busy fighting death that we have deprived many the ability to observe their faith and inadvertently, the very practices that give their life meaning.

The month of October, known as Mission Month across Australia, provides for us an opportunity to consider again the many ways in which we engage with others in the spirit of mission. October is a time to support the “hands-on” practice of mission in the traditional sense, when we pray for and encourage the work of countless missionaries in places far away. It is also good, in this month of October, to spend some time reflecting on one’s life – one’s own personal mission.

Pope releases new encyclical, Fratelli tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship

Sunday 4 October 2020

Pope Francis has written his third encyclical entitled Fratelli tutti (On Fraternity and Social Friendship) which he addresses to all people of goodwill. The encyclical was signed by the Holy Father during a recent visit to the tomb of St Francis of Assisi, whose words inspired the document’s title. Pope Francis offers the new encyclical as a proposal for a way of life 'marked by the flavour of the Gospel’. Five years ago, “Laudato si’, On the care of our common home”, the pope’s second encyclical, was also inspired by St Francis. While Laudato Si' focused on our relationship with the natural world, Fratelli tutti focuses on our relationships with each other.
