For more than 20 years, Janette Murphy rsj has been an advocate and friend of the Deaf community, having worked at the John Pierce Centre as a chaplain and now as a volunteer. These days, Janette assists with the provision of Auslan during the weekly Mass livestreamed from St Patrick’s Cathedral. While she acknowledges that this time of the pandemic has been challenging, she says in some ways it’s also been a good opportunity for the needs of the Deaf community to be recognised by the mainstream.

Unlocking growth in your parish: The power of invitation

Wednesday 9 September 2020

Proclaim: Office for Mission Renewal

We all want our parishes to be healthy and growing. Pope Francis dreams of a ‘missionary impulse, capable of transforming everything’ and inspiring ‘a constant desire to go forth and … elicit a positive response from all whom Jesus summons to friendship’ (Evangelii Gaudium, §27). At the heart of this missionary impulse is a people confident and equipped to invite others into relationship with Jesus and the Church.

Building a strong invitational culture is an essential element of a missionary parish. In the past, all that was required to grow a parish was to build a church, open the doors and welcome those who came. Today, however, ‘We cannot passively and calmly wait in our church buildings’ (Evangelii Gaudium, §15). People are no longer coming to our doors. There is a prior step required. We need to go out, beyond our doors, to meet people where they are and then invite them in.

Wednesday 9 September 2020

Professional Standards Unit

As children’s first and most enduring educators, parents are best placed to begin conversations with their children in an age and developmentally appropriate way. Protecting God’s Children Parent Resource: A Catholic Parent’s Guide to Keeping Their Kids Safe is a protective behaviours resource aimed at supporting Catholic parents of children aged 5-12 years old. The resource helps parents teach children a range of important personal safety skills, supports the development of emotional intelligence skills and promotes a child’s understanding of the right to feel safe through engaging activities and storybooks.
