Since the Turkish military operation commenced in the afternoon of 9 October 2019, there have been continuing reports of intense shelling and airstrikes along the north-east Syrian border. Tens of thousands of civilians have fled from the fighting. The full humanitarian impact of the current military operation remains difficult to ascertain given the volatile situation.

The image of Moses from our first reading today is dramatic. In the Israelite’s battle with Amalek, the perennial enemy of God’s People, it is God’s chosen leader, with arms outstretched, who sustains Joshua and his fighters. Yet, without the support of Aaron and Hur, Moses would have wilted, and the battle would have been lost.
