The most awesome and eagerly awaited moment for the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Bayswater has finally come, with the celebration last Saturday, 10 February, of the golden jubilee of our parish. It was in 1968 that Our Lady of Lourdes Parish was established by Archbishop James Knox, thanks in the main to the enormous hard work of the parishioners of the time.

Fifty years later, Melbourne’s Archbishop Denis Hart was the main celebrant at the dedication of the new altar, which was specifically made to serve as the memorial of the Golden Jubilee. Monsignor Anthony Ireland, Episcopal Vicar for Eastern Region and parish priest of St Gregory the Great, Doncaster as well as Fr Jacob Kavunkal, Head of Faculty at Yarra Theological Union, Fr Joseph Amal parish priest of St Luke’s Wantirna and our parish priest, Fr Sebastian Mappilaparambil were the concelebrants assisting the Archbishop. Fr Giang Tran, Prefect of Ceremonies and parish priest of Corpus Christi, Glenroy was the Master of Ceremonies.

Past and present parishioners as well as staff and students of Our Lady of Lourdes School were present at our joy-filled event. The Reverend Sisters of the Salesian and Sacred Heart Congregations also graced the occasion. Other guests who were present for the Mass and dedication were Hon Alan Tudge, Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs and MP for Aston, Hon Heidi Victoria MP, Member for Bayswater District, and parishioner Adam Gill, a Councillor of Dinsdale, Knox City.

The highlight of the celebration was undoubtedly the dedication of the altar. For many parishioners, it was their first experience of witnessing that kind of Catholic ritual and many said that they will never forget it.

Before the end of the Mass, all parishioners who were with the parish for 50 years were recognised by the awarding of a certificate and the gift of a personalised golden jubilee candle.

A social gathering followed in the Parish Hall where everyone was treated to delicious finger food supplied by Red Chillies, Bayswater.

Indeed, the golden jubilee celebration was an absolute blast. Everybody enjoyed it including His Grace Archbishop Hart, who acknowledged the hard work of the faithful parishioners of Bayswater, congratulated them and wished them all the very best in the future.

On behalf of our parish, a big thank you goes out to all the people who worked hard on this special occasion, especially to Veronica Measki who led by example in sprucing up the garden and decorating the Church, to Carol Smith the parish Event Manager, and to all the volunteers who helped in making this event such a wonderful success.

Here’s to Bayswater’s next 50 years!
