When Christiaan’s parents enrolled him into VMCH’s specialist school, St Paul’s College their goal was for him to eventually attend a mainstream school. 
Mum and dad, Elzabeth and Johan, are proud to say that their bright and bubbly 7-year-old who has Down syndrome started grade one this year full-time at a mainstream school. They credit St Paul’s College and its innovative Bridging Program for helping them achieve this dream.

In Australia last month we saw the delicate balance between too much and too little water. In Townsville and surrounding country incessant rain flooded houses, killed cattle and devastated people’s lives. Further south in the Menindee Lakes drought and water mismanagement killed many thousands of fish.

Down Syndrome Day is a time for reflection and celebration. In conversation about people with Down Syndrome we usually hear two different opinions. One view sees it as pitiable and a burden that ideally would have been eliminated by terminating the pregnancy. This view is not new. It was held in many ancient cultures. The other sees people with Down Syndrome as a gift to be treasured. Through them we learn and celebrate what is deepest in our humanity. In early Christian societies they were seen to bear the image of the King.
