The Spiritual Exercises are a compilation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices. They were developed by St Ignatius Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God.
Practically, the Exercises have consisted of long retreats spent in solitude and silence.
Recently, there has been a renewed emphasis on The Spiritual Exercises as a program for laypeople, going through the Exercises in smaller retreats in daily life, with a program of daily prayer and meetings with a spiritual director.
Shane Healy sat down with Australian Jesuits Provincial Fr Brian McCoy SJ this week to discuss The Spiritual Exercises and plans to make them more accessible to laypeople.
