On Friday Father Bill Uren SJ AO, the Rector of Newman College, will celebrate his Golden Jubilee of his Ordination (50th anniversary).
To mark the occasion, over two hundred guests gathered on Sunday 2 December at Newman College in Parkville for a Thanksgiving Dinner to congratulate Fr Uren on this significant milestone.
The dinner was also sheld to give thanks to other past and present founders and benefactors and to the Society of Jesus for their one hundred years of service.
In the 2012 Australia Day Honours List, the Rector was made an officer (AO) in the general division of the Order of Australia, amongst his achievements over a lifelong vocation.
The breadth and depth of his contributions have been described as enormous and ongoing for his service to education as a philosopher and bioethicist as a commentator on contemporary issues in Australian society, as a scholar and mentor include his role as a Rector at various colleges across the country, a Superior at the Australian Province of the Society of Jesus during the 1990s, published works on issues such as law and abortion, moral and ethical aspects of various ethical dilemmas and was awarded Doctor of the University at ACU in 2009 among many other achievements.
This week we spoke to Fr Bill Uren about his 50 years as a priest, his work at Newman College and his favourite parts of Melbourne Catholic history.
